Failure to yield at yield intersection means that a driver did not yield and check for oncoming cars before continuing through the intersection.  While many drivers commit this traffic violation all the time, it can lead to serious accidents, injuries and even death.  For those that are charged with this violation, there are several different consequences.

Fines and Penalties

If an individual is charged and found guilty by the court of a failure to yield at yield intersection, he or she can be forced to pay a hefty fine of approximately $100.  This amount may differ however, depending upon what state the individual lives in.  For more than one offense of this traffic violation, the fine may be more severe and there is a chance that the individual will have to do some jail time.

Traffic Points and Impact on Driving Record

While a fine is bad enough, it’s not the only thing one can receive on this charge.  Typically, the courts can give out up to 4 demerit points for a fail to yield at yield intersection charge.  These demerit points go on the driver’s permanent record and can cause the individual to end up paying increased car insurance premiums.  If one accumulates enough of these demerit points, they can have their driver’s license suspended for a period of time.  For second and third offenses, the points may be more and the insurance rates may become even heavier.

Hiring an Attorney

Often times, people are truly not guilty of the traffic violations they are being charged with.  In some cases, they were unable to help committing the violation, and the consequences should be lesser than they would if the violation had been deliberate.  Hiring an attorney can help individuals prove their side of the case to the court, possibly getting the charges dropped.

Attorneys are often able to get lesser charges for their clients, such as no points or a smaller fine.  It’s important to hire an attorney if one has been charged with failure to yield at a yield intersection. An attorney can represent you and ensure that you understand your rights and options under the current laws.  Attorneys often offer free consultations as well.
