Laws regarding U-turns varies considerably between each states.  Some jurisdictions state that you must not turn around on curves and hills unless you can see for at least 500 feet in all directions.  U-turns are not permitted near the crest of a hill where the driver of another vehicle cannot see your vehicle.

In general, the vehicle code states the following:

“No vehicle shall be turned so as to proceed in the opposite direction upon any curve, or upon the approach to or near the crest of a grade, where such vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of any other vehicle approaching from either direction within five hundred feet.”

Fines and Penalties

A traffic ticket can be issued to any driver who makes an illegal or unsafe U-turn.  U-urns are often prohibited for a variety of reasons and many jurisdictions specifically prohibit certain types of U-turns.  A citation for an illegal U-turn is categorized as moving violation.  The fine for this violation can range from $100 to $200 depending on the circumstances.

Traffic Points and Impact on Driving Record / License

Most states that have the driver point system will assess a penalty of 3 points against an individual’s driver’s license for making an illegal U-turn.

Hiring a Lawyer

Most traffic statutes say that a U-turn may be made on any road where the turn can be made with safety, unless an official traffic control device indicates that a U-Turn is prohibited by law.  If you can show that your conduct didn’t endanger another driver at the time, you may be able to get the moving violation reduced to a traffic infraction, rather than a moving violation, which carries a misdemeanor charge and points on your license.  An attorney who specializes in traffic law may be able to assist you with the specific charges of your case.  It will be well worth you time to hire a professional so you can avoid a permanent mark on your driving record.
