Can VASCAR Be Used as Evidence of Speeding?

VASCAR is yet another speeding tracker that has many people quaking in their boots.  VASCAR is a method used by highway patrol officers across the nation to catch speeders in action.  Many people do not realize that there are several technologies to trap speeders. In order to perhaps finagle your way out of a VASCAR speeding ticket, you will definitely need a solid understanding of VASCAR technology and how it can impact you.

What is VASCAR?

VASCAR stands for “Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder”.

  • Basically, VASCAR as a speed catching technology boils down to the VASCAR recorder tracking your speed during a certain distance and time.
  • This can fall into a touch and go area because as a driver, you probably will not know how long an officer was tracking your speed as well as from which points on the highway they were aiming the VASCAR device at you.

For example, you could be traveling the speed limit  now but seven minutes prior you might have been going 15 miles over the speed limit.  The issue comes into play when the officer stops you and may claim to have clocked you going  15 miles over the speed limit.  He or she may not disclose that their device tracked you doing this several minutes prior.

How Does it Work?

  • An officer will choose a target car.
  • Once that target car has been chosen he or she will then flip a switch to track the speed of the target at point A
  • When the target hits point B the officer will flip another switch on the VASCAR instrument.
  • At this point, the VASCAR instrument will printout the speed of the target vehicle.

Many people refer to the VASCAR technology as a speed checking stopwatch-calculator simply because in order for the patrol officer to track the speed, he or she has to enable a switch and then, after turning it off, the calculator component comes into play and calculates the average speed that the target vehicle was traveling at.

One of the problems with this form of speed checking technology is that it relies heavily on human input and where there is human input, there is also room (albeit marginal) for human error.  Officers have a certain response time that they have to meet in order to ensure accuracy when using the VASCAR technology.

Getting Help

If you have been given a speeding ticket based on VASCAR technology, it is a good idea to consult with an attorney who specializes in defending against traffic tickets. Your lawyer can help you to build a defense that the VASCAR technology was imprecise and can help you make a decision about how best to handle your speeding ticket.
