Depending on what you received your traffic ticket for, it could possibly be in your best interest to just pay it. However, when you get your traffic ticket, there is a good chance that the fine could very well be reduced to a fine that is much more budget friendly. While it does not necessarily cost anything to attend court, depending on how you plea you may risk paying a steep fine if you are found guilty of the offense.
Traffic Ticket Offenses and Penalties
You have to be clear on the offense that you have been accused of. Is it speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign or some other infraction? You will find the reason why you were ticketed on the ticket. Additionally, do you have any proof in support of your case? Your proof may lay in the environmental elements. For example, if you were accused of not stopping at a stop sign then you should be able to describe if any environmental elements (trees, branches, sun, etc.) obstructed the stop sign. These things will support your case.
As a rule of thumb, you might consider going to court. Most people would say that you should simply pay the ticket, however it may be to your advantage to go to court:
- Most of the time, traffic court judges can be understanding and helpful.
- For example, when it is announced what you are being charged with, the judge will normally ask you if you understand the charge against you.
- At that time you can tell the judge that you are not clear on the charge, and the judge will in turn give you additional information as to what the charge entails before he or she asks you whether you are pleading guilty or not guilty.
- Moreover, if you are absolutely sure that you are not guilty and you have a way to prove it, then definitely fight the ticket.
Most people might avoid fighting their traffic tickets if they know that they violated traffic law in some way. For example, if you were speeding and the police officer clocked you at 85 mph in a 45 mph zone, then you might consider paying the fine. Even if you are guilty, you can opt to show up to court so that you can either negotiate the fine or opt to go to traffic school. You should not simply settle on paying your ticket when there are other options at your disposal.
