Avoiding License Suspension After Too Many Tickets

License suspension can cause great difficulty in your life.  Not only will you lose your driving privileges for a period of time, but the suspension will forever remain on your record, which can affect your ability to get credit at lower rates and can influence potential employers’ evaluations of whether to hire you for a position or not.  When you receive too many traffic tickets in a relatively short period of time, you are likely going to face the possibility of a license suspension.

Reasons for License Suspensions

A court will impose a license suspension if the charge requires or permits that suspension.  Some of those charges include the following actions:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Fleeing the scene of an accident.
  • Committing vehicular assault or vehicular homicide.
  • Committing any type of drug-related offense, whether it would be a misdemeanor or a felony.
  • Failing to show proof you had liability insurance when you were stopped for any moving violation and not bringing proof to show that you’ve corrected that problem.

How to Avoid a License Suspension

The best way to avoid a license suspension is to not put yourself into situations that could lead to you getting your license suspended.  However, if you do find yourself in that situation, there are steps you can take to avoid a license suspension.

You can either contest your citation and win or negotiate a plea to a charge where your license will not be suspended.  It is best to have an experienced attorney to help you negotiate a successful plea, as that attorney will know the policies of that judge or prosecutor and know what steps to take and what charge to plead to in order to successfully avoid a license suspension.

To help your attorney present a successful case, you need to remember as many details as possible regarding the traffic incident.  This will enable the attorney to know exactly what happened and determine whether he/she can successfully build a case that will prevent a license suspension.

When License Suspension is Unavoidable

Sometimes, a license suspension is unavoidable.  However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get limited driving privileges during the suspension.  You may be able to drive to certain locations during your suspension, such as to and from your workplace and to and from your church, etc.  You may also be able to get the suspension terminated earlier than usual.  In both cases, you need to file a motion with the judge and prove that you have liability insurance, as well as show that you have no other suspensions of any type.  You’ll also have to pay any reinstatement fees and/or other fees that are required by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in order to get full driving privileges back.

Attaining Legal Help

Avoiding a license suspension when you’ve obtained too many tickets is not easy to accomplish.  An established, experienced attorney can help present the strongest case possible so that you can either avoid a license suspension or regain full driving privileges as soon as possible when a license suspension is unavoidable.
