A radar detector has a somewhat fun yet very controversial use for motorists; it allows the motorist to know where there is a police officer nearby who is ready to catch the unsuspecting motorist. Although this might seem initially sinister, the police officers are not out to get everyone but instead are trying to make sure the roads stay safe by encouraging individuals to slow their vehicles down and to respect the speed limit. Not many motorists who use radar detectors appreciate this line of thinking and feel they have a right to know when someone is lurking out there trying to catch them.

Detector Types

Radar detectors come in multiple varieties but their main purpose across the different models is the same, which is to catch the police officers before they catch you. Prices vary as do the effectiveness of the models, but in most instances, they are very good at catching the police office before the motorist manages to get within detection distance of the radar gun. In some instances, radars also detect security systems, which can at times confuse the radar detector. However, this is not often the case and the more expensive models have been designed to differentiate between the two in order to increase accuracy.

If you've been charged with illegally using a radar detector, or any other traffic violation, consult with a traffic violation attorney to discuss possible defenses to your case.

It is important to note that many advances concerning speed violation detection have been made in recent years. The first among these are new and improved speed detection guns, which use ultra fast lasers to catch the individual motorist. Although this might seem very high technology and not a cause for concern to the motorist, nothing could be further from the truth. The lasers are virtually undetectable, as they do not use the radar technology, which so many radar guns have used in years past. This along makes it formidable, but the fact that unlike the radar gun it is virtually never wrong is even more formidable.

Recently, there have also been an increase in the amount of photo based speed detection systems throughout highways and in cities, which are stationary and can catch individuals who are speeding within city limits. These motorists will usually learn where these cameras are located, but they are often camouflaged well and not necessarily easy to find. In addition, although some cities do mark the areas where they are in most motorists will not find out where the offense happened unless it goes to court.

It is also important to note that some states strictly prohibit the use of radar detectors due to what they represent. Many law enforcement agencies also object to them and are working to try to outlaw them in other states. There are number of agencies that receive money for the work they do on speed enforcement, which they lose every time someone escapes detection when speeding. There is also the concern that encouraging the use of radar detectors will encourage speeding which may result in more accidents, particularly with truckers.
