Driver's License in Foreign Countries

Many countries now allow individuals from the United States to use their states personal driver’s license in the countries provided they adhere to international law. It has also been requested internationally that individuals who wish to drive internationally obtain an “international driver’s permit” in order to understand international driving law. This means that you will want to know what laws are the same and which ones are different.

Most countries have their own laws regarding driving but the vast majority have nearly identical laws which means the driver will only have to brush over what the country he or she will be visiting has as its own personal laws. One main difference a person will want to find out about ahead of time with is what side of the road people drive on in the area they are going to and what side of the car they are seated in while driving. For some people, it can be hard to make this change so you may want to seek help in practicing before you make your trip when it comes to sitting on the other side of the car to drive.

Many of these countries have simple laws, which include never driving while under the influence of any form of drug or alcoholic beverage. They also have strict traffic laws and accident laws to make sure that should an accident occurs you report it and stay at the scene of an accident until law enforcement assistance arrives on the scene. Although different countries will have varying speed laws in which some state that individuals can drive far faster than in the United States, it is still important to adhere to the laws and drive at a speed that you feel comfortable at driving rather than one you are forced to drive. However, if your driving is far slower than the average motorist of that country is it is important to follow all laws concerning stating your intentions with hazard blinkers to warn oncoming motorists.

Different Transmission Types

Another major difference that some do not think about is that in many parts of the world the primary types of cars only use stick shift. This would mean that if a person did not know how to use a stick shift and was only able to use automatic they would have a great deal of trouble driving. These are only some of the differences you will want to look into ahead of time.

You will want to read up on if there are any further differences that are specific to the area you may be traveling to. This can be very helpful also, because you can find out more about the area, safety and maybe even a place or two that you would be interested in visiting. When you find out all the facts you need ahead of time you may also want to look into speed limits because some areas do not have signs telling you.
