Austin Police patrol officers were dispatched to a serious injury crash in the 4800 Block of North IH 35. A Dodge Caravan was travelling Northbound on IH35 when it struck the back of an 18-wheeler.
The 18-wheeler was stopped in traffic due to another crash further north that backed traffic up on the main lanes of IH35. For reasons unknown, the driver of the Caravan failed to slow down for the stopped traffic and struck the back of the 18-wheeler.
Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on scene. The driver of the Caravan was transported to Brackenridge hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler remained at the scene and no charges are expected to be filed.
Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at 974-6981. This case remains under investigation by Vehicular Homicide detectives. This is the 32nd traffic fatality of 2008.
