State Police Keeping DUI Enforcement Prevention a Top Priority

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania State Police's annual DUI enforcement statistics report shows that improved surveillance helped pull a record 13,406 intoxicated drivers from the road in 2005. Troopers made 13,323 DUI arrests the year before.

“We are working harder than ever to take intoxicated drivers off the roads and make Pennsylvania's highways safer for all travelers,” Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.  “We are using education, training and continued high levels of enforcement to get the job done.”

As part of its anti-DUI efforts, Miller said the department last year continued Operation Nighthawk, a specialized training and enforcement program.  Under the program, troopers and municipal police officers are trained in a classroom on two consecutive evenings, and then they immediately conduct roving patrols to identify and arrest operators driving under the influence.
