New York's Car Seat Belt Guidelines
Under New York State law, safety restraint use is required for: all front seat occupants regardless of age; all rear seat passengers under 16 years of age; children under age 4 must be secured in a federally approved child safety seat; children under age 4, but weighing more than 40 pounds, may be secured in a booster seat with a lap/shoulder safety belt; children ages 4, 5, and 6 must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system, one for which the child meets the child seat manufacturer's height and weight guidelines.
State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett said, "Memorial Day is the summer travel season's unofficial 'kickoff' in New York. Motorists will travel in great numbers, as they do every year at this time. Tragically, some motorists and passengers, including children, will die or suffer serious injury for failing to take one simple step - buckling up. Our troopers will be focusing enforcement on the top three causes of death on our highways: speed, failure to wear safety restraints and driving while impaired."
