Australia Introduces Device that Would Eliminate Speeding Tickets

Tuesday May 26, 2009

The latest device that is being considered by the Australian government is one that is mounted on the dashboard of the car, and monitors each driver’s speed, so that he or she does not go over the legal limit. The device uses satellites and GPS technology to know what the speed limit is in each area. It is connected to the gas supply of the vehicle, which is cut off if the driver goes too fast.

When the vehicle first senses that the car is moving too fast, it sends an automated warning to the driver, telling him or her to slow down. If the warning is disregarded, a message is sent to the gas flow, shutting it off, so that the driver is forced to slow down.

This technology was created because of increased traffic injuries and fatalities due to speeding past the legal limit. In addition, drivers were becoming upset that the money collected from their traffic tickets was not going to fund traffic safety programs and traffic safety schools.

The devices will be installed in 100 cars as a trial to test the safety and practicality of the new technology.
