Indiana E-Ticket System Issues Millionth Traffic Ticket
June 10, 2009
In 2007, the electronic Citation and Warning System was implemented in Indiana. Recently, the millionth e-ticket was given out. Indiana is the first state to use such a revolutionary system. When a driver is pulled over, the officer simply scans a bar code on the back of his or her drivers’ license and vehicle registration. This eliminates the amount of time that an officer and the individual who is pulled over have to remain on the side of highways and roads.
This also speeds up the court process, because as soon as the tickets are written, they are sent to the proper court and to an archive. This completely eliminates time-consuming and space-wasting paperwork. In addition, as one police officer put it, the tickets are much more legible because it can often be difficult for a police officer’s handwriting to be read.
The system is financed by federal and state grants. It has been installed in 24 patrol cars and hopes to buy 14 more in the future. It is much more accurate and a traffic stop can be completed within four minutes. It has attracted the attention of Illinois and Canada.
