Arizona Drivers to be Reimbursed for Tickets
July 8, 2009
A police department in Arizona is now working to reimburse a total of $36,000 to more than 1,000 drivers, who received tickets for running a faulty traffic light. On June 22, the town sent out 1,063 letters to inform the drivers about the tickets that were issued between May 7 and June 17.
The drivers were told that they could expect a full refund of their fines. The left turn signal at an intersection lasted only three seconds, but the town’s policy dictated that the yellow light should last 4.5 seconds. The tickets were issued by a camera, which had taken a picture of the drivers’ license plates.
Those who paid only a citation will receive a refund for $182 and those who were forced to attend defensive driving school will receive $234. It has not yet been determined whether the traffic light malfunction was caused by equipment or human error. Either way, the light has been fixed.
