Is it possible to dispute a parking ticket in New York City?
Parking tickets in New York City are not uncommon. If you come back to your car and find one waving hello from your windshield, you’re not alone. The good news is that it is possible to dispute a parking ticket in New York City, and doing so actually isn’t a very complicated process. If you have a good reason behind it, you may even be successful in getting the ticket dismissed.
So, what are the rules for Disputing Ticket NYC Parking Violations Bureau and what counts as a good reason to dispute a ticket? “I was just gone for a minute” doesn’t count. But if your ticket was genuinely the result of something outside of your control, like a broken parking meter or a missing “No Parking” sign, then the law might be on your side. You’ll need evidence, though, so it’s wise to take photographs of the scene or speak to witnesses if at all possible.
In certain situations, the court will offer you a reduced fine, depending on your reason for filing the dispute. This is a fairly recent occurrence; the New York City Department of Finance recently instituted a program that encourages reduced fees to cut down on hearings going through the court system. It’s a good idea to take the reduced fine offer if your case is a little shaky. But if you’re determined to go through with it and you know you’ve got evidence on your side, you can go ahead with the in-person hearing, which means a judge will ultimately rule on your case and send you a decision in writing afterwards. You'll want to have a lawyer on your side during this process, however, if you want to increase your chances of successfully disputing the ticket.
