Me and my buddy got pulled over for street racing when we were not going that fast, can I defend this?
Me and my buddy last night were on the way home from our night class in college. I don't want to self incriminate myself or anything, but basically, we were both accelerating a little faster than usual as the stop light turned green, but we both stopped when we were about 10-15mph above the speed limit at 55-60mph (the speed limit was 45mph). We ended up getting pulled over by some cops and were accused of racing. What charges am I expecting and can I fight this at all? I live in California.

California has been increasing the penalties for Street Racing Laws over time as more and more frequent racing cases turn into disasterous accidents resulting in multiple deaths. Racing is very dangerous and not taken lightly.
You are being charged with "Speeding Contest." Basically, under this charge, even if you aren't going over the speed limit, it appears you are having an acceleration contest with the vehicle next to you and will be considered as racing. However, if you were caught going 100mph+, you can count on your vehicle being impounded and a charge of reckless driving as well.
1st time offenses would have a penalty of $355-1,000, 24 hours to 90 days in jail, (both, or one of either). 40 hours of community service, and a license suspension with restricted driving privledges for up to 90 days. It really depends on the overall circumstance and your prior criminal record as well as driving record. Hiring a Traffic Ticket Lawyer would be a good idea in fighting the charge. At the least, a skilled attorney should be able to avoid having it on your permanent criminal record, significantly lower the penalty fees, avoid jail time, as well as license suspension.
