Teenage drinking is a huge problem. One recent study found the overall costs of teens and alcohol abuse runs in the billions of dollars. In 2006 the study reported that the cost of underage drinking was $60 billion. This figure included the violent crimes and crashes that resulted from alcohol abuse. Underage drinking and driving is perhaps one of the most severe problems facing law enforcement today. The consequences of driving under the influence include death and injury to self and others. The numbers are frightening. It is almost certain that everyone will have a family member who experiences an alcohol related crash. Statistics report that for a family of five the chances of one family member being involved in an alcohol related car accident are 200 percent. Even more problematic is the fact that the majority of the fatal accidents occur to teens. Peer pressure and other factors cause teens to drink and get behind the wheel. Law enforcement and grass roots organizations are taking great strides to stop the current trend and reverse the numbers.
