Traffic Ticket

Getting a traffic ticket is a relatively common event. If you get a traffic ticket, you have several choices:

  1. Do what nine out of 10 people do and pay the ticket.
  2. Go to court and try to have the ticket dismissed by the judge.
  3. Hire an attorney to help you try to get the ticket dismissed or to negotiate a plea bargain with prosecutors.
  4. Attend traffic school to have the ticket dismissed. This option is only available in 23 states. The ticket must not have been issued as the result of an accident.

Speeding tickets are the most common traffic tickets issued. But a speeding ticket can have a huge impact on your life. If you pay the fine, that is considered a guilty conviction. Your car insurance rates can increase and points will be added to your driver's license in the states which have point systems. And if you get too many points on your driver's license, your license can be suspended or revoked.

Fast Facts

  • Most states add more points for increased speed. For example, if you were going more than 30 miles over the speed limit in Vermont, you will add eight points to your license. If you were speeding less than 10 miles over the posted limit, you will only get two points on your license.
  • In Missouri, if you get more than eight points on your license in an 18 month period, your license can be suspended.
