Most states offer some sort of driver education courses or programs, often called state "traffic school", that can help lessen the negative effects of traffic citations on your driving record. In some states, you can enter into one of these special programs in order to remove points from your driving record, which would otherwise increase your auto insurance premiums and eventually lead to fees and/or suspension of your driver's license. Other states may permit you to have a traffic ticket dismissed altogether if you complete the educational requirement, although there are often limits placed on the number of times that you can take advantage of these programs. Plus, attending traffic school may be a requirement of some traffic law convictions, and/or for having your license reinstated after it has been suspended or revoked. Some states sponsor programs themselves for drivers in these situations, but more often, the state simply sanctions courses or programs that are administered by private companies.
