State Driving Records

State driving records are the official records of your driving history, based on your driver's license in a particular state. The state department of motor vehicles, or its equivalent office, maintains and updates state driving records. State driving records are not public records, as they contain personal identifying information about drivers, such as dates of birth, current and former addresses, and social security numbers. However, driving records are available to various government offices in order to carry out their functions, such as law enforcement agencies, and may be made available to other private companies, but only with your consent. An example of a situation where you may need or want to consent to the disclosure of your state driving records is if you are applying for a job that requires review of your driving records, or in order for an auto insurance company to provide you with requested insurance coverage.

Fast Facts

  • Employers are increasingly scrutinizing driving records for the purposes of screening applicants.
  • 2006 was a record low year for the state of Utah in terms of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
