While speeding ticket prices may be high in some respects, your decision whether to pay the fine and move on, or to attempt to have the speeding ticket dismissed should be based on the time, effort, and expense of each option that you have before you. Simply put, some speeding tickets can be beat, and some speeding tickets simply can't be beat. You will have to decide whether you want to put the necessary energy into fighting a speeding ticket which may result in you having to pay the fine anyway. First, you should study the law of the state under which you are charged, and determine whether you violated each element of the relevant law. If there is a particular element of the relevant law that you didn't violate, then your speeding ticket should be dismissed. Next, ask yourself whether any other defenses might apply to your case. Could the police officer have clearly viewed your vehicle and/or your rate of speed at the time that he or she pulled you over? Was the police officer mistaking your vehicle for another speeding vehicle? Was it safe for you to drive somewhat over the speed limit (which is permissible in some states)? Did the officer properly measure your speed? These are all potential defenses to speeding tickets that you must examine in order to help determine the likelihood of success in contesting your speeding ticket in traffic court.
