Seat Belt Ticket

As safety awareness has increased over the years, so has the prevalence of seat belt laws, which now exist in some form in every state. While about half of states have primary seat belt laws, which allow a police officer to stop a vehicle solely for the purposes of issuing a seat belt ticket, about half of states have secondary seat belt laws, which permit a police officer to issue a seat belt ticket only if the driver is being stopped for another traffic law violation. In many states, a seat belt ticket simply results in a fine that a driver must pay. In other states, a seat belt ticket will result in points being added to the driver's license, which, if enough points are accrued, can result in more serious consequences, such as a driver's license suspension. Therefore, while seat belt tickets can be rather minor in the range of potential traffic violations, they also can have some more serious and costly consequences.
