Right Turn On Red

Right turn on red laws, also known as "right on red" laws, are laws that exist in all states, which permit drivers to turn right at a red stoplight, except where signs otherwise prohibit it. Congress, through the State Energy Program, requires that all states have a law permitting right turn on red, except where prohibited. The goal of right turn on red laws is to accelerate traffic flow and reduce fuel usage. By promoting the ongoing flow of traffic, less fuel is wasted. With that said, it is up to state and local governments to determine at which stoplights and/or intersections where right turn on red is not permitted. Those intersections are clearly marked with signs indicating that right turn on red is not permitted, and in most jurisdictions, a driver can receive a traffic citation for failing to obey a right turn on red prohibition. With the establishment of red light cameras in some jurisdictions, however, there have been some tickets issued for legal right turns on red, where perhaps the driver did not come to a complete stop. This development, in turn, has raised some questions of the propriety of ticket citations being issued for right on red turns via red light cameras.
