Reckless Driving Laws

Reckless driving laws are designed to deter people from driving on a public roadway in a manner that places other people's safety at risk, including both the occupants of a vehicle and pedestrians. Most states' reckless driving laws designate reckless driving as a misdemeanor crime, which is less serious than a felony crime, but still shows up on your criminal record. Typically, isolated acts such as speeding, driving without your headlights, running a red light, and other minor traffic infractions do not amount to reckless driving. However, a combination of these acts, depending on the circumstances, could result in charges against you under reckless driving laws. Plus, some reckless driving laws contain examples of certain actions that qualify as reckless driving, such as racing another vehicle or attempting to flee from a police officer. In all cases, the prosecutor must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you have violated your state's reckless driving laws in order for you to be convicted of reckless driving.
