Reckless Driving Illinois

Illinois law defines reckless driving as driving without taking into consideration the safety of other people or property. In order to be convicted of reckless driving under Illinois law, you do not have to intend to drive in a reckless manner; you can be convicted of reckless driving in Illinois even if you had no intentions of driving recklessly. Additionally, Illinois law specifies that driving with the intent to cause your vehicle to become airborne automatically qualifies as reckless driving. Illinois law also contains the crime of aggravated reckless driving, which is a more serious charge used when your driving causes severe physical harm or disability to another person. While reckless driving under Illinois law is a Class A misdemeanor charge that can result in a jail sentence of up to one year, and a fine of up to $2,500, an aggravated reckless driving conviction is Class 4 felony, which carries a prison sentence of up to 3 years, and/or a fine of up to $25,000.
