Proof Of Insurance Ticket

Throughout the United States, it is illegal to drive a vehicle without minimum levels of liability insurance coverage, and you are required to be able to show proof of that insurance coverage at all times. Thus, if a law enforcement officer asks you for proof of insurance, and you cannot produce it, he or she may issue a ticket. In some states, you can remedy this ticket, or have it dismissed, if you simply provide proof of liability insurance coverage within a certain timeframe. However, in some states, producing proof of insurance after the fact does not take care of the ticket. For example, in some states, you may receive points on your license as a result of failing to provide proof of insurance upon request; if you accrue a certain amount of points, then you can lose your driver's license. Likewise, some states can suspend your driver's license if you do not show proof of insurance as requested, or order that you be supervised by the Department of Motor Vehicles or a similar agency, which will check periodically in order to ensure that you maintain liability insurance.

Fast Facts

  • In some states, you can post a cash deposit or surety bond with the department of motor vehicles instead of maintaining liability insurance for your vehicle.
  • Providing proof of auto liability insurance is often required in order to reinstate your driver's license after it has been revoked or suspended.
  • If you are unable to produce proof of insurance when requested, you may face increased auto insurance premiums in the future.
