Most states have laws against making an illegal U-turn. In these states an officer can issue a ticket to a driver who makes a U-turn where it is posted that they are illegal. Other states allow drivers to make U-turns in situations where it is safe to do so. These safe situations include the ability to see oncoming traffic and the speed of the oncoming cars. Other laws exist in some states that expressly prohibit the making the U-turns in certain situations. These situations include turning on the top of hill, at a curve, or in any location with limited visibility. Because the laws for making an illegal U-turn vary from state to state drivers are urged to follow a few simple driving rules to avoid receiving a ticket. First, never make a U-turn at a traffic light or in the middle of a block. Do make a U-turn where visibility is limited. Do not make a U-turn where signs prohibit them. And, never make U-turns in the presence of police officers.
