Correctable Violation

While there are many serious violations of traffic law that require police officers to give you a ticket and cause you to have to pay a fine, appear in court, or go to jail, others are much more easily rectified. These are called correctable violations. Correctable violations can include mechanical flaws, registration violations, insurance violations, and driver's license violations. When you receive a ticket for a correctable violation, you have a certain amount of time to fix that violation, show proof of that correction, pay a small fee (often under $50), and have the ticket dismissed. In the case of insurance, registration, or driver's license violations, often you have the paperwork, just not on your person or in your car. By showing evidence of compliance to a police officer and paying a fee, your ticket will be dismissed. For mechanical flaws or non-compliance, you must fix the problem and show proof of correction to a police officer before your ticket will be dismissed.

  • Failure to comply with the correction order can result in much higher fines (up to $200), a hold on your registration, or suspension of your driver's license.
