Contesting Parking Tickets

You receive a parking ticket when you have parked a motor vehicle in a restricted place or in an unauthorized manner. This can occur when you park at an expired meter or fail to put enough change in it, when you ignore parking signs and park in a no parking zone, or in some jurisdictions, when you fail to purchase a parking permit for a neighborhood or zone in the city in which you live. Unfortunately, there are times when the system charges you with an infraction that someone else incurred. If you have evidence that you were not in the city on that day, or that you were parked legally, you can decide that contesting a parking ticket is the right thing to do. In some cities, those challenges are quite successful. In others, victory is rare. A lawyer can help you make that determination. He can also ascertain if you have enough evidence to go to court and win.

Fast Facts

  • Be sure to have your challenge in on time. In some cities, you only have 7 days to file for a hearing or to mail in your explanation of extenuating circumstances.
