College Tailgate

American sports fans have turned tailgating into a refined social institution, with its own rules and equipment. Some fans do not consider a game complete without the pre- and post-game tailgate party. Nevertheless, there are some legal concerns about these parties, especially on college campuses. First, drinking can get out of hand when tailgate parties may begin up to 12 hours before a game. Some universities have chosen to limit tailgate parties to certain locations or bar alcohol, once the game actually starts. Others have barred kegs altogether, hoping that will limit the abuse. If students become more interested in drinking than the game itself there can be even greater problems, such as disorderly conduct, fighting, and drunk driving. Campus security forces are working hard to stop these abuses, and students can face warnings and even arrests if they lose control.
