California Traffic Court

California has stiff penalties for traffic violations that can cost a great deal of time and money. If you receive a ticket, be sure to read all the information carefully and make sure you know how to respond. Every California driver charged with a traffic violation must either appear in court on the assigned date or choose Trial by Written Declaration. If you go to California traffic court, judges will often let those charged with minor violations go to traffic school. If completed successfully and on time, charges may be dropped. In that case, no points will be added to your driving record and there should be no insurance rate increase. If you choose not to fight the ticket or if you are found guilty, points will be added to your driving record. Additional points can lead to higher fines, and if enough points are accrued, suspension of your license. In addition, insurance companies can raise your rates.

Fast Facts

  • If you choose Trial by Written Declaration, your trial will take place by mail, with the judge making the final verdict based on the evidence submitted by you and the arresting officer
