In addition, while California already has a seatbelt usage rate of over 95%, authorities want it to be even higher. As a result, they have raised fines for anyone receiving a California seatbelt ticket. Those over 16 riding or driving without a seatbelt can be fined well over $100. If there are passengers under 16, the fine can be over $400. In addition, it is illegal for children under six and weighing less than 60 pounds to ride in the front seat. It's important to know that a California driver is responsible for the seatbelt compliance of all passengers in his car. He is even accountable for adults and children not related to him.
